If you’re in town for the Democratic National Convention coming up in Charlotte, North Carolina, then you’re in a lot of luck! Time Warner Cable is gonna give everyone in the area free Wi-Fi in uptown Charlotte and inside the Time Warner Cable Arena before and during (but not after, unfortunately) the Democratic National Convention.
This is among many of the charitable and convenient things that Time Warner is known for doing. The free wi-fi will be accessible from your laptop or even your mobile phone from Aug. 27 to Sept. 7th 2012. It’s called TWC WiFi, and will include a huge network in more than 90 hotspots in key locations around the city. This whole projects is just one small part of the internet and cable giant’s proposed $2 million investment in the area’s network infrastructure. Cool, huh?
Now, before and after those dates, those free access points will be limited to certain paying providers. But that’s cool that you can access these places forever more, even after the DNC is long gone.
This new system isn’t gonna blanket the whole place with a uniformly strong signal, so you may have to job a little to get a good connection. But Time Warner’s executive vice president Carol Hevey has stated that tests ensure the network will hold up for the some 35,000 convention visitors that are expected.
There are some other cool upgrades that are also in the works, including:
–Upgrading the arena’s video services to an all-digital platform. Time Warner Cable is also the official video communications and cable television provider for the convention.
–Upgrading fiber-optic network feeds to the arena and Bank of America Stadium, to ensure uninterrupted service.
–Adding fiber-optic network feeds to several uptown hotels and venues for high-speed access.
